Internal combustion engines

If there is one thing that people in 2050 will be laughing out loud at, it is internal combustion engines -- the kind of engines we find now in everything from automobiles to lawn mowers. The reason why they will laugh at them is because they are so very, very sad. Think about how sad they are:
  • The most glaring problem is the waste. Something like 80% of the fuel that goes into an internal combustion engine comes out as heat rather than motion. 80% of the fuel is completely wasted, in other words.

  • Then there is the pollution - nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, soot, hydrocarbons, etc.

  • Don't forget the carbon -- something like 5 pounds of carbon is emitted for every gallon of gas consumed.

  • Then there's the noise.

  • And don't forget idling. Idling! You are sitting at a traffic light not moving at all, but the engine is still running -- still burning fuel, producing heat, making noise and spewing pollution -- for absolutely no reason. When you think about it, idling is insane. Yet every car engine has to idle.
All in all, the internal combustion engine is pathetic. Yet, even with all those problems, it is still the best we've got right now. At this moment, electric cars and fuel cells cannot compete on price, range or reliability. That is amazing, and that is why people in 2050 will be laughing so hard. To people of the future, our internal combustion engines will make us look like cave men chipping stones to make arrow heads. The engine technology that we use today is just as primitive.

Don't forget the carbon -- something like 5 pounds of carbon is emitted for every gallon of gas consumed.

Gas weighs 6 pounds per gallon. Five pounds of carbon emitted seems high. Do you have a source for that. I looked but was unable to find anything other than gas is about 84% carbon.

I would think that because:
a) the fuel doesn't build up in the car,
b) fuel dose not have mass being converted directly into energy E=mc^2 style,
c) atoms of carbon stay atoms of carbon, (there is no neuclear fusion or fission going on, at least in my car)

... then there will be the same amout of carbon going in as there is going out.

As 84% of 6 pounds is about 5.04 pounds, that is basically 5 pounds of carbon per gallon of gas that goes in, so you'll get 5 pounds of carbon back out per gallon.

Your probably right. I assumed much more of the gas was consumed. (Converted to energy). I suppose any fuel we burn is going to dump carbon into the atmosphere. We don't have many good alternatives.

The gas is consumed, though it does depend on what you mean by "consumed".

I believe long chains of carbon (long = heavy => liquid) get converted into small particles (small = light => gas out the exaust pipe) in the engine. But it is still carbon!

(BTW: make the chains longer, you get coal. Purify into just carbon (rather than hydrocarbon), compress, and you get dimonds!)

You're right. The same atoms that go in the engine also come back out. The only difference is how these atoms are arranged.

Rearranging gas molecules (via combustion) is where the energy come from.

I enjoyed reading the article on quasiturbine engines on howstuffworks. I certainly hope that these good ideas become a reality sooner than later.

I just hope we're able to finesse the transition away from internal combustion quickly enough and smoothly enough. Predictions of the imminent peaking of world oil production are rather worrisome. It'll be hard to get the energy transition done if we have a significant energy deficit in the interim.

modern engines waste fuel, this design wastes less but of course you cant buy one yet cause although i invented it i am not in a position to make them so for the TSJ engine read on then find someone and make your own
I am publishing this design as I am unable to raise the funds to build it myself let alone the cost of patents

ok for a rotary engine description
this is text only so no drawings sorry

first look at the turbojet engine principle, thanks to nasa we have a basic description here http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/bgp.html simple enough, ok.
to use a jet engine it has to run at an optimal speed to be efficient and powerful, this rotational speed has also to be near constant and cannot therefore be effectively used in automotive applications.

to get round this problem introduced by the dynamics of a jet engine we need a totally different system,
the solution is to use the screw compressor principle instead of turbines.

the advantage of this design is that it can run efficiently over a wide rpm range and when compared to for instance a wankel design the non-contact design of this device has very low wear and friction

so the basic solution is to replace the intake and exhaust turbines with screw compressors.
theres more to it than that,
take a look at a modern turbo jet, the first turbine is large getting progressively smaller
we can duplicate this effect by designing a screw compressor with a variable pitch so that the screw at the intake end has a wider and deeper thread width and at the exhaust end shallower and narrower pitch, the exhaust turbines are the opposite as is our screw compressor.
now we can all look forward to a future with engines enjoying the benefits of simplicity of design, low friction, low vibration and high fuel efficiency especially when compared to a piston engine

I think there's a direct link between this article and what you were saying in the one about guns. Combustion engines are really just guns; instead of a little piece of metal, they fire a piston connected to a crank. The results, in each case, are equally obsolete...bicycles are stil the most efficient way we're come up with to turn energy into motion. Imagine what we'll accomplish (and all the resources we'll reclaim) when we get over our teenage desire to travel 70 mph to the grocery store.

Electric already exceeds internal combustion for reliability though ; think about it. Engines have hundreds of moving parts. An electric motor essentially has one.

Engineers on the EV1 program reported the servicing to be very easy ; rotate the tyres, fill the washer fluid, and drive the car back onto the lot.

The real problem is batteries. Current battery technologies suck. When they crack the design on a battery that has an equivalent or better effective energy density to fuel, the really sad technology will be our awful batteries.

The law of conservation of mass says that the amount of stuff you start with exactly equals the amount of stuff you finish with. So, 5 pounds of carbon in, 5 pounds of carbon out- in some form. What form?

CHx (formula for any hydrocarbon) + O2 (in the air) = CO2 + H2O + energy. The energy is released due to chemical reaction of C + O in the above equation. Other side products are formed, NO2, SO3 (sulfur from contaminants in fossil fuel,nitrogen from the air, which is 80% N). So, the point is, we turn fossil fuels into CO2 and pollutants.
